Tucked in the Detroit midtown (our first campus assignment) is The College of Creative Studies (CCS). It is full of liberal, artistic, brilliant people with brilliant minds who stand-out from the crowd. Weekly, Jessi and I would diligently pray, engage students in spiritual conversations (oh, there were some interesting thoughts!), and trusting God to work in the hearts of students there.
I, Scott, was still ‘wet behind my ears’ in ministry during those first couple years in 2003-2004. I’d ponder the lies like…
“God can use me?” “What do I have to offer, God?”
Eventually, God surfaced a collection of CCS spiritually interested students who began to spiritually grow. One of them was, John, a tall slender guy who’d already made a decision to follow Jesus, but wasn’t confident in his faith – especially in college! John and I would weekly meet together weekly to build John in his faith and part of that was sharing his faith with others! Eventually John graduated and we lost touch.
Now, 12 years later, I received an email (below) about John, who’s now confident in his faith!
“Today John came to CCS to have lunch with our Cru students (pictured left) and to talk about how he is living out his faith, challenging atheistic/ agnostic thinking, and sharing with his co-workers in the art world. He spends a good bit of time learning logical arguments for biblical Christianity in order to have intentional questions with co- workers about their spiritual background. By gently pushing back on co-workers objections and why they believe what they believe, he’s getting in long-term spiritual conversations while investing in sincere friendships. Scott, your faithful work you put into John a decade ago is still evident in his personal life and in his work. It’s really encouraging to hear because he is basically exactly what we hope from Cru students when they graduate.”
Wow, God used me with all my weaknesses and he is using YOU to mobilize Christ-centered laborers, like John into the harvest through your partnership!!!
