Early November of last year, around a long concrete conference table and capped off with a 56” flat screen playing Monday Night Football, 16 men from our church gathered at a local restaurant during our monthly “Wings Night.” I (Scott) met Todd, a financial advisor first-timer, who wasn’t quite sure if he belonged. Sensing his level of comfort, the Holy Spirit prompted me to move toward him. We stumbled through some initial questions (as men seem to do!) that led to learning about his spiritual journey. He revealed that he was searching for God, eager to understand this area of life that he feels is missing. Before leaving we exchanged phone numbers and I asked, “Would you like to grab coffee?”
Todd and I have been meeting weekly, having spiritual conversations, talking about the weariness of life, and discussing the character of God through 6 investigative studies. Having deep conversations through studying Scripture together – Truth began to expand within Todd’s heart. I’d hear him say, “You and others have something that I do not and I want to understand what it is.”
Slowly he began to put the “Gospel-pieces” together – seeing his misconceptions and how he’d been misled. God’s unconditional, never-giving up love gripped him at the core.
As we built a solid foundation of discovering who God truly is, we began to wrestle with the cost of following Jesus (“Is Jesus worth it?”). Processing aloud, I said something (without knowing) that God used – that “ah-ha” moment for Todd.
“Think of our lives as having gauges; there are emotional, physical, relational, spiritual gauges. What if the spiritual gauge is the one that powers all of the others?”
This was Todd’s “‘ah-ha” moment where he found following Jesus is worth it. Early Friday morning on March 13th in a Panera Bread booth and with our eyes watering, Todd joyfully found the missing piece; he filled the spiritual gauge; he gave control of his life to Christ. He tells me, “How is there any other choice?!”
Pray for his continued growth as we keep meeting and that he’d grow into multiplying his life as a disciple of Jesus. From a Panera Bread to the the darkest corners of the world – your
partnership is changing lives! Thank you!
